What does the future hold?

As far as advances in 5G connectivity are concerned, a key factor will be the widespread deployment of standalone 5G networks. Most 5G networks right now use non-standalone technology. This means 5G is built on top of existing 4G infrastructure. In these networks, the connection may still rely on 4G for the uplink, with 5G capacity being brought in primarily when higher bandwidth is required.

Standalone 5G, by contrast, uses a dedicated architecture, enabling much greater bandwidth, lower latency and more advanced capabilities such as network slicing. Standalone 5G is currently concentrated in denser urban areas, but deployment is expected to expand significantly over the coming years. The UK government is targeting standalone 5G (5GSA) coverage across all populated areas by 2030.

Private 5G networks, network slicing and ultimately 6G are all destined to become more important in helping keep energy and water companies connected with devices such as sensors, infrastructure, and field workers.

When it comes, 6G will offer more than just speed. The service will provide greater capacity, lower and more predictable latency, more advanced network slicing, and deeper integration with AI. This will help networks to dynamically manage traffic and connectivity based on application requirements.

6G is also expected to integrate public and private 5G/6G networks, edge computing and satellite connectivity, enabling devices to move seamlessly between different types of connectivity. Ericsson is already able to offer low earth orbit satellite services to help ensure uninterrupted coverage.

Other potential benefits of 6G include increasingly massive IoT networks and improved coverage and resilience.

The service is still being standardised, with wider commercial deployment expected around the end of the decade.
