Unlocking Data Award
This was one of the most hotly-contested categories with judges noting the strong interest shown by both utility and non-utility companies. Entries showcased a use of data for energy flexibility, for restoring services and for understanding discolouration in water, among other things. The judges were pleased to see a clear link in most of the entries to tangible benefits, either to customers, the wider system or the environment. A trend noted on the energy side was the intelligent use of smart meter data – something which could be key in highlighting their usefulness to customers. One of the criteria that received the lowest scores from the judges was the installation of an open data culture across the wider business. They commented that this was an area they would like to see improvement on in future years.

Cadent Gas, ULC Technologies & ICS Consulting - Utilising data for targeted robotic remediation in London
Cadent Gas, in partnership with ICS Consulting and ULC Technologies have identified 160km of metallic pipes in North London which are cost beneficial to remediate using ULC’s innovative robotic system, CISBOT.
This was made possible by unlocking and leveraging Cadent’s historical data and applying advanced data analytics to an asset investment optimisation solution.
The work has proved transformative in facilitating data-driven decision-making; optimising resource allocation and reducing the social, environmental, and financial impacts of managing critical gas infrastructure.
Through the power of unlocking and leveraging historic data Cadent can make informed and impactful investment decisions on their assets.
EDF Energy and Accenture - Complaints Transformation
In the last year the energy industry, and EDF, has been through an unparalleled crisis, meaning more of our customers have needed our help than ever before.
Despite being a leader in complaints we challenged ourselves, together with Accenture, to transform the complaints experience using data.
The results were transformational - 40% volume reduction, halving the resolution time and releasing 40+ advisors’ capacity to support customers.
This was achieved through use of new data lake capabilities, data-driven workflows, data science, AI and Machine Learning that together intelligently categorised issues, automated administrative actions, and supported Advisors with next best action.
EDF UK and TATA Consultancy Services - Data Powered Transformation Program
EDF-UK and TCS’ entry for the Unlocking Data Award showcases how modern cloud based data technologies have helped us support customers through the recent cost of living crisis while creating a platform for sustainable future.
With over 5.5 million domestic and business customers, EDF-UK is one of the leading Energy suppliers and committed to help Britain’s net zero target.
Through the right focus on people, process, and technology, we have democratized data, enabled self-service, have good governance, increased trustworthiness of data, delivered actionable insights to drive customer experience & business benefit as well as deliver value for wider society.
Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks - Smart ETR
Smart ETR is an industry-first model which uses AI and machine learning to take hundreds of thousands of data points and provide an accurate restoration time to customers within a matter of minutes.
This includes combining network and asset data with historical and live fault data and pulls in real-time information such as traffic and road closure notices.
Immediately after launching, Smart ETR provided direct benefit to customers, with drastic improvements in both accuracy and customer satisfaction, and it continues to improve every single day.
Utilita Energy - A data-led campaign for Life with Power
With every smart meter Utilita installs, it helps one household avoid fuel poverty, and the humanitarian crisis that this winter will bring. Data is at the core of everything Utilita does, and everything Utilita is. As the UK’s first supplier to fit a smart meter, and with 95% of its PAYG households smart-installed today, its rich data plugs the data void that exists between the Department for Work and Pensions and the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. Utilita’s energy insights data has proven to the government that there’s no excuse for any household to go without energy.
Connected Data and OVO - A seamless multi-data/multi-bureau approach to bridging the ‘unknown
Change of tenancy related occupier debt is a major painpoint, traditionally tackled by engaging one data partner ie a credit bureau to identify the real occupant where it’s occurred. The issue persists. A multi-data partner approach inclusive of a multi-bureau strategy should be considered. The complexity and cost involved makes this unviable. Connected Data has changed this, securing multiple data partner integrations, including all three UK bureaus, with a unique contractual structure, dramatically simplifying and shortening timescales to implement them. OVO is the first to embrace it, seeing a 20% occupier identification rate (eclipsing its 15% target), and double-digit ROI.
Centre for Net Zero
Centre for Net Zero is an autonomous research unit delivering pioneering research to make the future energy system a reality.
As part of the Octopus Energy Group, we leverage its global dataset for research purposes. Our access to tens of billions of customer data points gives us an unparalleled insight into the behaviours of people and businesses.
We analyse this dataset in depth, run field trials and experimentation, and build models to generate novel data and insights about the future energy system. We use this research to influence the key decision makers who can help accelerate the energy transition.
LCP Delta - The Energy Transition Trackers
We developed the Energy Transition Trackers because there is a gap between the large, disparate, complex datasets that exist across the energy market, and the users that need this information distilled in a clear way to make decisions to further the transition.
We have brought energy experts in specific fields with an intimate knowledge of client needs together with technology teams that serve hundreds of clients through SaaS products, to develop a suite of tools initially focussed in three areas where there are particularly large gaps in data transparency and actionability across Europe: energy storage, flexibility markets and electric vehicles.
M Group Services - Safe Dig AI
Digging for utility infrastructure is inherently dangerous. Morrison Water Services’ Safe Dig AI method of operation and innovative thinking helps to eliminate risk.
Safe Dig AI helps to keep our operatives safe by ensuring they know exactly what is under the ground before they break into it.
This revolutionary system uses Robotic Process Automation (RPA) and AI to quickly and accurately compile packs of utility plans in as little as 30 minutes compared to several hours. These digital packs are then shared with our operatives via a user-friendly, intuitive and feature-rich app accessed via desktop and mobile phone.
SMS - Demand Flexibility Service
Smart meters – and the data that they provide – are recognised as a fundamental enabler for the UK’s decarbonisation.
As we saw last winter with the launch of National Grid ESO’s Demand Flexibility Service, this data also provides the “fuel” for the future stability and security of our energy system.
However, in order to “unlock” the full value of smart data, the ESO needed the support of (non-supplier) data, flexibility and aggregation experts to enable wider access to the service for a diverse range of providers, organisations, and consumers.
Step up SMS plc, and its innovative n3rgy and FlexiGrid platforms.
Stantec - High redolution digital site capture
Part of the AMP7 WINEP Programme, Stantec and Yorkshire Water Services (YWS) set out to assess feasibility of Enhanced Biological Phosphorus Removal at 14 of YWS’ largest Wastewater Treatment Works. Including comparisons of whole life cost, carbon and engineering feasibility. Stantec specified drone surveys to build high-resolution photogrammetry-based 3D models using ContextCapture. This allowed detailed information on existing assets to be retrieved from the models and allowed new structures and process units to be superimposed on the models to aid in constructability reviews. All of this, whilst reducing the cost, time, carbon emissions and H&S risks associated with physical surveys.
Water Research Centre - Understanding discoloured water using data-driven analytics
Drinking water supply and quality continues to be one of the most common causes of customer contacts.
Despite significant improvements to drinking water quality since privatisation, water utilities are facing a greater challenge than ever before to reduce customer contacts related to discoloured water supplied through their networks. WRc has progressed this challenge in the last 3 years by conducting its own research, statistical analysis and machine-learning modelling with support from several water companies.
We have worked with three water companies to produce data-driven actionable insights, which have resulted in a reduction in customer contacts.
