A DSO vision
Nigel Bessant, head of network operations, SSEN Distribution summarises the company’s vision for its DSO function.
Our journey to next zero needs to be smart, fair and now which is why we’ve published our DSO Accelerator Strategy and Action Plan.
SSEN is already delivering for our customers and communities, for example, we have launched our new data portal to improve our stakeholders’ access to our network data, mobilised our new whole systems team, and launched our new LENZA tools to support local authorities develop their net zero plans.
Participants at this debate highlight some of the key challenges we are working hard to address by giving better access to granular network data, sharing smart metering data, and building increased and inclusive flexibility market participation.
We are driving transparency and coordination by increasing visibility of our networks by sharing real-time network and planning data, and building transparency and trust in our operations. We are working to develop an inclusive flexibility marketplace by expanding the range of services available to stakeholders including LV and Grid Edge.
We are also encouraging participation in the marketplace and delivering network flexibility at scale though a range options for dispatch and coordination with the Electricity System Operator to meet the network needs. In addition, we forecast and plan strategic investment with local needs in mind to avoid unnecessary delays and reduce costs for customers.
Effective DSO operations will result in lower costs per unit of energy, opportunities for new markets for customers to realise the value of their flexibility, and viable local energy solutions that will drive decarbonisation at the local level.
